Over the past few years, generative AI chatbots have garnered a lot of traction, and companies like OpenAI and Google are leading their way with continuous AI chatbot updates. Recently, OpenAI announced an AI search update for ChatGPT. On the other hand, Google introduced Gemini Live, which allows users to have free-flowing, natural conversations with Gemini in English.
In the boom of AI chatbots, choosing the best can be daunting. However, ChatGPT and Gemini offer great features and have their own set of uniqueness which we will discuss in this article. We will also explore the core features of both AI chatbots, their methodology and training, price, and the steps to use ChatGPT and Gemini.
So, let’s get started!
ChatGPT: What is It?
Introduced in November 2022 by OpenAI, ChatGPT is a generative artificial intelligence chatbot. It is based on the GPT-4o large language model (LLM) and allows users to have human-like conversations for various tasks. A sibling model of InstructGPT, ChatGPT is trained to follow instructions in a prompt to provide a thorough response.
ChatGPT is used to write content, code, create a resume, build charts and tables, develop an app, analyze PDFs, and more.
Training
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT has been trained using Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), using the same methods as InstructGPT, but with slight differences in the data collection setup.
A model from the GPT-3.5 series, which completed training in early 2022, used to fine-tune ChatGPT. ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 were trained on an Azure AI supercomputing infrastructure.
ChatGPT: Accessibility and Price
ChatGPT no longer requires you to log in with your email address. You can access ChatGPT simply by visiting chat.openai.com.
ChatGPT can be accessed on the web, iOS, and Android. You can use this AI chatbot for free, however, there is a subscription option – ChatGPT Plus – that provides extra perks, such as access to GPT-4o, DALL-E 3, and the latest upgrades.
The price of ChatGPT depends on whether you use the free version, individually, in teams, or for enterprise.

Gemini: What is It?
Formerly known as Bard, Gemini is Google’s generative artificial intelligence chatbot. Based on the large language model of the same name, Gemini is Google’s most capable and general model, developed to be multimodal and optimized for three different sizes: Ultra, Pro and Nano.
Similar to other AI chatbots and LLM-based content creation tools, Gemini is designed to generate real-time responses to a range of user inquiries. Gemini can help you write, visualize, organize, and connect with colleagues. It can also be used in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Videos and Meet.
Training
Gemini is designed to be natively multimodal, pre-trained from the start on different modalities. The company has fine-tuned Gemini with additional multimodal data to further refine its effectiveness.
This helps Gemini seamlessly understand and reason about all kinds of inputs from the ground up, far better than existing multimodal models — and its capabilities are state of the art in nearly every domain, according to Google.
Gemini 1.0 was trained to identify and understand text, images, audio and more at the same time. According to the company’s blog post, Gemini 1.0 trained at scale on AI-optimized infrastructure using Google’s in-house designed Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) v4 and v5e.
Gemini: Accessibility and Price
Google’s Gemini can be accessed on the web, Android and iOS. This GenAI chatbot is embedded in a range of Google services, including Google Workspace, Chrome, Ads, and Cloud. Additionally, Pixel 8 Pro uses Gemini Nano model.
The price of Google Gemini varies depending on Gemini models and uses. The following table shows the price of Gemini for Google Workspace.
Category | Price | Features |
Gemini Business | $20 per user/month billed annually | Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Drive, Slides, Sheets and Meet Access to Gemini with Google’s most capable AI models Enterprise-grade security and privacy Meets the needs of typical business users |
Gemini Enterprise | $30 per user/month billed annually | Includes everything from Gemini Business Advanced meetings with AI note-taking and translated captions in more than 65 languages Automatically classify, label and safeguard sensitive documents with AI Full access and usage of Gemini |
What are the Limitations of ChatGPT and Gemini?
ChatGPT and Gemini both have several advantages and use cases. However, these AI chatbots also have limitations that must be considered when choosing the best.
ChatGPT limitations:
OpenAI itself lists some of the limitations of ChatGPT which are as follows:
- ChatGPT can generate responses that seem reasonable but are inaccurate or irrational.
- ChatGPT can be used to tweak to the input phrasing or repeated attempts at same prompt.
- The model is often excessively verbose and overuses specific phrases, such as restating that it is a language model trained by OpenAI.
- Ideally, the model would ask clarifying questions when the user provided an ambiguous query. Instead, the current models usually guess what the user intended.
According to the company, it has made efforts to make the model refuse inappropriate requests. However, the model will sometimes respond to harmful instructions or exhibit biased behavior.
Gemini limitations:
Google has listed certain limitations of Gemini for Google Cloud which are as follows:
- Edge cases refer to unusual, rare, or exceptional situations that aren’t well represented in the training data. These cases can lead to limitations in the output of Gemini models, such as model overconfidence, misinterpretation of context, or inappropriate outputs.
- Gemini models might lack grounding and factuality in real-world knowledge, physical properties, or accurate understanding.
- The performance of Gemini for Google Cloud products can be greatly impacted by the prompt data quality, accuracy, and bias.
Bias amplification, language quality, fairness benchmarks and subgroups, and limited domain expertise are other Gemini limitations.
Key Differences Between Gemini and ChatGPT
Gemini and ChatGPT are both AI chatbots and are used for a variety of tasks. However, there are key differences between ChatGPT and Gemini.
Use Cases: While Gemini is used for research, creative tasks, and image generation, ChatGPT is better for creative text-based tasks.
Voice Mode: Gemini and ChatGPT both allow users to verbally interact with them. In Gemini, there is a voice-to-text mode. ChatGPT, conversely, allows users to verbally communicate back and forth with it.
Image Retrieval: While Gemini can show relevant images from Google Search, ChatGPT can only share links to relevant images if you prompt it to.
Image Generation: Both AI chatbots can generate AI images. However, Gemini generates images for free, whereas ChatGPT limits this feature to only paid subscribers with DALL·E 3.
ChatGPT vs Gemini: Choose the Best
Gemini and ChatGPT have their own features and uniqueness. As ChatGPT offers more variety and stability in its core features, Gemini comes with a slightly more affordable and user-friendly pricing structure.
The free plan of both AI chatbots allows users to do more and make the most out of the tasks. While Gemini’s free plan covers Google-search-powered capabilities and access to various Google extensions, ChatGPT’s free plan recently included access to GPT-4o models and some custom GPTs.
Both Gemini and ChatGPT provide business users with built-in features, integrations, and add-ons.
ChatGPT and Gemini are both user-friendly and provide ease of use and implementation. Thus, choosing the best AI chatbot can depend on your uses and the outcomes you want from them.
Wind Up
As the world of Generative AI is rapidly evolving, a survey from Gartner predicts that around 70% of business leaders are now exploring the use of GenAI within their organizations.
Furthermore, a Statista report revealed that the global Generative AI market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 46.47%, from US$36.06 billion in 2024 to US$356.10 billion by 2030.
