The use of AI for news will enhance local journalism and news reporting.

AI and computational journalism company, AppliedXL has partnered with The Associated Press (AP) to provide AI-powered local news tips. The company will also provide advisories on energy, health, and environment issues to AP member newsrooms to enhance local journalism.
The new initiative, AP Local Lede, highlights how government actions affect communities and businesses across all 50 states by identifying and contextualizing the local impact of federal regulations from over 430 agencies. It does this by leveraging AppliedXL’s autonomous news gathering technology and drawing on feedback from AP journalists.
The technology developed by AppliedXL emulates the rigorous workflow processes used in newsroom research. With human oversight to reduce AI dangers, the system’s algorithms examine data from reliable public sources, give context, and carry out programmatic data validation and self-checks.
“We are pleased to be using AI in this new way to deliver timely and accurate news tips to local news organizations,” said AP director of AI products and services Troy Thibodeaux.“Our goal in deploying AI is to help expand the reach of our journalism and provide our members and customers with tools that enhance their own reporting.”
The Associated Press aims to pilot AP Local Lede with an initial cohort of member news organizations, with plans to expand the group in the coming months. These media outlets receive county-, state-, or region-specific news insights. Topics include changes in health care policy, developments in renewable energy, critical infrastructure projects, economic growth, and environmental protection efforts, among others.
AppliedXL CEO, Francesco Marconi said “AP has been a pioneer in the development and implementation of AI and represents the gold standard for news innovation. By integrating AP’s journalistic principles into our AI agents, we can make these systems reliable and transparent, and as a result, build trust with AP customers who receive these insights.”
Founded by computational journalists who worked at The Associated Press and The Wall Street Journal, AppliedXL powers real-time professional information for other global firms like Bloomberg, financial institutions and Fortune 100 companies.
