Recently Nobel Prize in Physics winner Geoffrey Hinton pointed out the serious concerns about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm, has awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2024 to J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton for their breakthroughs in machine learning with artificial neural networks.
Regarded by many as the ‘godfather of AI’, Hindon said “We need to worry about overall consequences,” and emphasized the significance of addressing potential risks associated with AI development.
The computer scientist has always been concerned about the future of AI and its impact on humanity.
“AI will have a huge influence similar to the industrial revolution. Instead of exceeding physical strength, it will enhance people’s intellectual abilities. We have no experience in having things which are smarter than us. It could give us much better healthcare and be more efficient,” Hinton said.
“It will make a huge improvement in productivity, but we also need to worry about bad consequences, particularly threat of these things getting out of control.”
“Before AI is smarter than us, I think the people developing it should be encouraged to put a lot of work into understanding how it might try and take control away.”
“Right now there are 99 very smart people trying to make AI better and one very smart person trying to figure out how to stop it taking over and maybe you want to be more balanced,” Hinton added.
As per Hinton, there is a need for ethical considerations and responsible development in the field of AI. He also emphasized increased collaboration between scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders to establish robust safeguards.
Commenting on the AI tool he uses the most, Hinton said he uses ChatGPT and he was surprised at winning the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics. When asked what AI tool he uses the most, his answer was ChatGPT and said that he was flabbergasted and surprised at winning the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.
This is not the first time when Hinton has warned of the influence of AI on humanity. Last year at the Collision tech conference in Toronto, he stressed the significance of understanding how AI may take control before it surpasses human intelligence.
Geoffrey E. Hinton and John J. Hopfield have won the Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 for their foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.
